Transcending the Ego

The Bhagavad Gita says, “The Self does not create in men the consciousness of being doers of actions, nor does It force actions on them, nor does It entangle them with the fruits of actions. Delusive Cosmic Nature is the originator of all these evils.” 5:14

We see from these words that God/Spirit/The Self/The Soul is not the originator of the ego. Delusion is the originator of this fixation on the little self.

If we can identify more with our TRUE nature, we will align ourselves with true joy.

We will never be happy until we serve something larger than our little selves!

Unless we can give our hearts to something bigger than our own little lives, we will never expand our consciousness to realize our oneness with “all that is.”

It is a natural tendency to refer everything that happens back to ourselves: how does this affect me? Reacting personally reinforces the ego.

Rather, we need to think in terms of a broader reality: is this circumstance in line with dharma? Is it right action? From our calm center within, let us evaluate circumstances not from a personal standpoint, but from a broader perspective.

Science tells us that matter consists of vibrations of energy. Knowing this, we can now understand that we ourselves have a separate reality only as an every-changing cloud of energy. We are, in truth, part of a Single Reality.

We have to put out energy, and exert our will, and then God will help us.

We have the potential for realizing, feeling, and experiencing the vast ocean of divine consciousness. But we need cultivate humility in order to realize this potential

Sri Yukteswar tells us that the little self is “a mere idea resting on a fragment of spiritual light.” When we truly understand how small we are, humility comes quite easily to our consciousness!

If we are “hell-bent” on asserting our will to make something happen, or if we are resigned to letting others run roughshod over us ~ neither of these two extremes will bring us happiness.

Instead, let us simply share with others. We need to own ourselves, and at the same time listen intuitively to others. In this way we can hear the whisperings of the soul; and know the right course of action in every circumstance.

When others criticize us, it’s easy to react and retaliate--this is how the tangled web of karma is woven! Instead of creating more karma for ourselves, we can work on not reacting. When one feels criticism from others, instead calmly look inside to see if there is any truth to the criticism and work to change oneself. And if not--to ignore it!

Instead of dreading the tests that come to us, let us cultivate an attitude of joyful anticipation! For God sends us tests, not to hurt us, but to give us a chance to learn and grow!

Tests are a way of improving our character and a way to hone our skills as children of God.

If we learn to give respect to everyone, even those we find difficult, we learn a valuable lesson in stilling the reactive process. By not indulging in impulses that lead to pain, we start learning the advantages of self-control, and stop creating more and more karma for ourselves.
